EMV Skimmer

An advanced skimming device known as a “shimmer” is a paper-thin card insert containing a microchip and flash storage. It is secretly placed inside the card slot of terminals to intercept data from an EMV chip and PIN code during transactions. The stolen data can be used to clone a fully functional chip card or to create a magnetic stripe clone for fraud.

Efficiency

EMV shimmers are more effective than traditional skimmers because they can be inserted into indoor POS terminals, ATMs, vending machines, and gas pumps. They passively record transaction data between the card and terminal. The criminal periodically retrieves the device to collect the data; the victim is unaware during normal payment.

Technology (Developed in the 2020s)

EMV chip cards contain two card validation codes (CVCs): one for the magnetic stripe and another for the chip. Using specialized software to generate these codes, a cloned chip card can be created that passes authentication checks (SDA, DDA, CDA). Unlike traditional skimmers that only create magnetic stripe clones (usable in stores but not ATMs without a PIN), an EMV shimmer also captures the PIN. This allows the creation of a cloned chip card that can be used to withdraw cash from ATMs.

How It Works

1. Apply the included special glue to the four corners of the EMV shimmer.

2. Use the included insertion tool to place the shimmer inside the target card reader. It fits flush and remains hidden.

3. To extract collected data, use the included special card. Data transfers to this card, and the shimmer’s memory is automatically cleared for continued use.

4. Connect the special card to a laptop via the provided card reader/writer and decryption software.

5. Use the software to convert the encrypted data to a readable .txt format.

6. Use the provided reader/writer and blank ISO 7816 IC chip cards to create exact clones of the original cards.
